Varicose Veins in the Winter: Precautions

Blood then compiles and augments the veins, which as a result will cause them to become varicose.  Are you aware that the wintertime reaps some benefits for varicose veins? With dropped temperatures and chilled weather, this season can reduce discomfort and other side effects in comparison to other warmer seasons.   • The wintertime usually calls for relaxation and staying indoors. However, did you know cooler weather can actually be more comfortable for someone with varicose veins? Warmer climates cause veins to reflux and aid in poor blood circulation. In contrast, cooler climates cause veins to shrink, which then in return allows the vein valves to work accordingly. Therefore, blood will not collect around the calves and ankles and reduce cramps and relieve swollen ankles.


  • Also, compression socks are much more comfortable to wear in the winter to help with varicose veins. Wearing them over and up the thigh will help blood flow, regardless of the damage the veins already have. Additional benefits of wearing compression socks are relieved discomfort, fatigue, and pain. And of course, they will keep you warm!


  • Lastly, the wintertime has reduced UV rays in comparison to the summer as sunshine is reduced. Treating varicose veins is also best in the winter as well. It is suggested to refrain from the sun once any varicose vein procedures have been completed.



  • Colder weather, as mentioned above, can influence the amount of time people spend indoors. This can be considered a disadvantage since people are less likely to participate in exercise. While relaxing has its benefits, lack of movement can negatively affect your veins. With the holiday season right around the corner, this could cause weight gain due to overeating. Those with varicose veins should exercise as often as possible with low-impact exercises (such as cycling, swimming, walking, etc.), which deem more difficult because of snow, mud and the need to feel comfortable. Always try to get some type of physical activity in to remain healthy and to support overall vein health as well.


  • Skin problems are more likely to occur during the wintertime, which can be problematic for varicose veins. With less nutrients and ample amounts of oxygen reaching skin and tissue cells, additional pressure in swollen vessels will cause changes in the skin. As a result, discoloration and irritation can occur. This can lead to more serious skin issues, such as venous ulcers and venous dermatitis. Therefore, it is important to moisturize the skin on a daily basis.  Preferably apply moisturizer right after taking a shower while skin is still a tad wet.
